The Bayou comes to Pairadice

I have discovered the game of Malifaux (I know this may be old game for some) and absolutely love this game (and will give my thoughts in a different post).  Partly because it allows me to use my 28mm western stuff again but also because of PIG BOMBS.  Anyway, I have a Gremlins outcast crew (photos hopefully in the next few days as I finish up painting them) but as always my focus is on the scenery first so I have been working on some gremlin based scenery.  It is all 28mm based and you can see an unfinished gremlin for scale.

Rally Round the King - Talomir campaign

I have joined in the Talomir campaign found here.  This is my first proper game of RRTK so I managed to make a couple of mistakes and forgot a few things.  This game is played on a 3’ x 3’ map and all tokens are to scale.  I played it Solo with the mechanics playing both sides as necessary.  I did choose movement distance but this was based on the tactics each army used for the battle.  The small blue and yellow markers are the magic users for each army and I had placed them there just to remind myself that they were being used.  Later they would reveal themselves and then would be attached to the unit they were next to.

The armies consisted of the following units

Mangu –Blue & White (based on historical Mongol army)

S – skirmish cavalry

C- cavalry

L- lancers attached is the General Aluminium Khan

MU – magic user

Stygustan – Yellow & White (based on historical Egyptian army)

LC – light chariots

Ar – archers

I – infantry

A – axemen attached is the General Warththestep

MU- magic users

Deployment

Due to the large number of Mangu skirmishing cavalry, they outscouted the Stygustans 26 - 10 and this would force them to place 6 units for every 3 of the Mangu. As the Stygustan were invading Mangu, they would move first. The table top would be mostly open. The Mangu would use the Double Envelopment tactic, while the Stygustans would employ the encircle flank tactic and setup was determined by these tactics.

Turn 1 - Stygustan

The chariots wheel right, ready to attack the flank next turn, while the archers move slowly up the centre.

Turn 1 - Mangu

The skirmish cavalry move up on both flanks and prepare to fire at the archers and light chariots while the lancers and cavalry move up the centre. Not-tu Nite (the magic user) reveals herself and prepares to cast Fog of War. She targets her lover and general Aluminium Khan but is unsuccessful as she feels a headache coming on. Luckily for Khan, he has asprin on hand and is able to keep her in the battle for a little while longer. Unfortunately she uses up 5 out of her 10 magic points.

Turn 2 – Stygustan

Wartchthestep surveyed the battlefield and feels claustrophobic. The chariots activate and either fire at the skirmishing cavalry or move into position to fire at C1. The shots result in 1 hit on S9 and 2 hits on S8. Their reactions are to return fire hitting Light chariot 1 for 1 hit and then causing it to retire taking another hit. Unfortunately it contacts I1 and takes another hit. LC3 fares even worse - it takes 1 hit from return fire and in an appalling show of courage it routs from the battle. The infantry block containing Wartchthestep remains stationary to 'reinforce' any holes that appear. He then commands his sorcerers to assist and they then prepare to cast blast at S5 and S3. Not-tu Nite detects the spell but is unable to prevent it from being cast. S5 takes 1 hit but is unable to return fire as it is does not LOS to the sorcerers. S3 retires away from them but as this then causes them to retire through S, S routs and S3 continues on. The archers move forward slightly while Ar1, 2 and 8 halt due to the chariot. Ar5 shoots at S6 causing 1 hit for no hits in return but they do retire and then take 1 hit.

Turn 2 – Mangu

Aluminium Khan smiled to himself. His skirmish units had performed admirably. They had bottlenecked the Stygustans and had caused confusion within their battle lines. His skirmishers on his right repositioned themselves to attack the archers. C1 is ordered to charge LC2 and causes it to retire and take a hit as a result LC2 contacted LC and took another hit. Not-tu Nite had to wash her hair and as a result was unable to cast any magic this turn. S8 shot at LC and caused it to retire taking 1 hit and then a second as it contacted Ar2. The final movement of the turn was S3 & S5 moved into position to fire next turn.

Turn 3 – Stygustan

Wartchthestep looked around and saw that his front battle line was splintering apart and as a result he could not bring to bear his massed fire power. LC2 shot at C1 causing 1 hit and C1 then proceeded to advance 1/2 move and charged LC2. LC2 then proceeded to retire, taking 1 hit, take another hit as it contacted LC and then was pursued by C1 (having just discovered the rule) and routed. LC then fired on S8 causing 1 hit and forcing it to retire. Warcththestep prodded his sorcerers in to casting a spell but they were unsuccessful in summoning a hero.

LC1 could not shoot as S5 was out of arc and Ar8 blocked the shot on S3. Ar8 couldn't move as LC stopped it moving forward, it couldn't wheel without hitting Ar1 and as it had halted due to friendly troops in the road it couldn't turn to face S3 (assuming that I have done this correctly). Ar3 & 4 continued to move forward while Ar6 shot at S6 and Ar5 shot at S7. Both S6 and S7 retired taking another hit each.

Turn 3 – Mangu

Khan still felt positively about how the battle was proceeding but his skirmishers were starting to be worn down. S1, S2 & S3 fired at Ar5 and caused 3 hits and routed from the battle. Not-to Nite managed to cast despair on to Ar4 dropping their rep by 1 and then Khan gave the order to charge with both his lancers and the attending cavalry unit. Ar4 stood and shot causing a hit on the lancers and an arrow lodged in the helm of Khan, just narrowly missing the eye slit and bouncing harmlessly off. With lances raised and sabres rattling the cavalry cause 4 hits on Ar4 while Ar4 managed to hit C for 1 point.

Turn 4 – Stygustan

Things were looking grim for the Stygustan army and Wartchthestep knew it. The turned opened up with LC1 shooting at S3 hitting once S3 then returned fire also for 1 hit routing LC1. LC4 wheeled left. LC wheeled to get in to firing arc on S9. Ar1 not wanting to suffer the same fate, expanded out from behind Ar2. Wartchthestep wheeled to the left and advanced as fast as he could. Ar6 fired upon C generating 1 hit causing C to charge and routing Ar6.

Turn 4 - Mangu

S1, S2 & S4 reformed. Khan, his lancers and C1 formed up the line with C. S9 fired at LC hitting once and causing it to retire taking another hit and then a third hit as they retired in to Ar9.

Turn 5 – Stygustan

'Curse those skirmishers to the lowest level of Hell!' spat Watchthestep. The battle had been lost and now it was time to withdraw from the field. The invasion of Mangu had faltered but by conserving the army as much as possible, there would be at least a next time.

Now it was time to determine the major pursuit and casualty recovery. In the end 4 archers were not recovered.

At this point I felt the game had gone to Mangu and that as the game is part of a campaign, that the Stygustans would retreat to minimise the loses that will carry over and reduce their army composition.

ACW update

After  way too long, I have finally managed to get access to the internet , luckily through BMG my friendly neighbourhood games store.  I was hoping to show photos of my painted britannian fleet for Dystopian wars but forgot the photos.

So will have to make do with photos of my new work station and some ACW fences that I have made.  I was hoping to play a game of Piquet Hallowed grounds but my monthly throat infection stopped that.

The fences still  need work but were usable.

Long time no post

It has been way to long since my last post and I am unsure how long it might be for the next one.  Having shifted back to Bundaberg, we find out that the house that we are renting has been set for when the NBN is completed in our estate.  As a result we have incompatible infrastructure with the ‘normal’ set up and therefore cannot get a phone line or access to ADSL.

We have been told that it should only be a ‘couple’ of months before NBN connection is complete but until then we have to go on wireless.  Telstra in their infinite wisdom won’t give out anything less than 24 month contracts and when told that we only want it for a few months they said that we could just pay for the remainder of the contract for internet that we won’t be using.

As a result we have gone through Dodo who at least offer 6 month contracts but as they piggyback of the Optus network, the signal strength here is crap and as a result I average 5 KB/second which is just painful.  So this is a test post to see how long it takes to upload and I shudder to think how long it might take to upload a post with photos in it (even if reduced in size).

Any way whinge over so a quick update of what I have been doing over the last couple of months.

1. Dystopian wars – Kingdom of Britannia fleet (KOB)

2. Learning how to air brush using my KOB fleet as my test subjects

3. Firestorm Armada – Aquan fleet waiting to get my air brushing skills up as I really would like to have a similar paint scheme in the rule book.

4. Making up more scenery for Dystopian Wars.

Pictures will follow when I can go around to a friend’s place and use my tablet for my next post.

Hive Fleet Megalodon evolves

I have finally gotten around to building some mycetic spores for my Tyranid army, they are the tyranid version of space marine drop pods.  These were made using a method that I found on TerraGenesis for alien polyps. I envision them to be a combination of an egg and carnivorous plant.

I have been wanting to make these up for the last couple of years and never got around to it until now.  I slightly modified the process and the open one is of my own design.  I would like to have varnished them in a gloss coat but as I don’t have any yet, that will have to wait.

Golden Phoenix Chapter founding background

I have been trying to create a background for my 40k marine chapter.  It is a combination of Dark Angel, Blood Angel and Vanilla marine miniatures.  I like the idea of using certain miniatures so I want to be able to use Space Marine, Dark Angel and Blood Angel codexes.  I realise that I can just use them any way but I felt I needed to have my background in place first.  Any way it is not Black Library standard but hopefully a reasonable read.

The sleek hull of the Emperor’s Gift glides silently through the shifting eddies of the warp. The occasional rainbow coloured halo briefly coalesces around the cruiser as unseen entities try unsuccessfully to gain entry. The serenity inside suddenly shatters as an extremely bright flash erupts from the Emperor’s Gift and the warp envelops her whole.
Even though sirens scream inside, the occupants move purposefully from room to room. “Captain, the Geller field has gone down,” a robotic servitor droned.
“All crew to battle stations; brother marines prepare for possible daemonic borders” calmly ordered Captain Jameuk in to the vox on his chair.
Suddenly the servitor to Jameuk’s left whirrs, “multiple contacts on decks epsilon, delta & zeta.” “Squads Theo, Halpin and Franco repel borders. Remember your faith in the Emperor is your shield,” Jameuk orders as he moves towards the display, studying it even as he walks closer.
“Squad Liunc, move towa.....” the Captain freezes mid-sentence.
Down in the hull, a translucent mist starts to take form and other shapes appear just seconds later around it. A large bird like creature stands before a large adamantium door with an evil smile on its beak. A dozen pink creatures hold jars in their arms and one receives a not so gentle shove and asks, “Master what are we here for and what’s in the jars.”
With a malevolent stare, the Greater Daemon, KR’ KIIR, gives a slight chuckle, “my dear underling, these jars contain what the humans call gene-seed. They take their weak children and by splicing the gene-seed with their own genes it makes them in to the soldiers that are present on this ship.” The pink horror looks up confused, “why then are we giving them more of it? So they can make more?”
With a sigh of exasperation, KR’KIIR continues, “The gene-seed in this vault comes from a group of humans that have a pure and stable genetic makeup, while the seed from the humans known as the Blood Angels, is flawed and our Master has seen that by switching the seed, it will further his one of his great plans.”
“Why don’t we just kill them then,” an inquisitive horror blurts out from behind. KR’KIIR shoots an irritated glance at the horror and with a squeal it agonisingly splits in two and they both take on a pale blue colour and it continues, “All you have to know is that if we kill them, it is over too quickly, BUT if we alter their genes, the grand Tzeentch has seen that great confusion can be sown and the fate of a human sector is at stake.”
“How will we get past the wards on the vault,” the first horror tentatively asked. “With the shields of the ship down, I can access the full power of the warp to bypass the wards, but leave them there so as to not generate suspicion,” replies KR’KIIR as it stares intently at the door. With a wave of its feathered hand, the contents of the jars within the vault slowly dissolve into the amniotic fluid they are floating in, and with another wave the contents of the Blood Angel jars vanish and appear inside the jars in the vault.
Then as suddenly as they appear they disappear.
“.........rds the armoury and secure it.”
“Captain, this is Sergeant Den’ves. The daemons have suddenly vanished.”
“All stations - damage report NOW!” barked the Captain.
“No damage or casualties to report and the Gellar Field is back on line.”
“Monitor all stations and let’s make all haste to help our brothers.”

I WAS CALLED IN TO INVESTIGATE THE UNFORSEEN RESULTS OF THE SPLICING OF THE ULTRAMARINE AND GOLDEN ANGELS GENE-SEED. THE RATE AT WHICH THE ZYGOTES WERE GROWING WAS AT AN ACCEPTIBLE LEVEL BUT ROUGHLY 200 YEARS AFTER THE INTIAL MODIFICATION WERE COMPLETED THE MARINES OF THIS CHAPTER ARE NOW SHOWING SOME SIGNS OF THE RED THIRST. WE KNOW THAT THIS IS A CHAPTER SPECIFIC FLAW TO THE BLOOD ANGELS AND OF THEIR SUCCESSORS BUT IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PRESENT HERE.
ALL POSSIBILITIES WERE INVESTIGATED AND I EVENTUALLY DISCOVERED THAT THE INSTEAD OF THE ULTRAMARINES GENE-SEED, SOME HOW BLOOD ANGEL SEED WAS CONTAINED WITHIN THE CRYO TUBES. NORMALLY THE SPLICNG WOULD NOT HAVE SUCCESSFULLY UNITED, SO THIS THEN LEAD ME TO THE DISCOVERY THAT THE CRYO TUBES CONTAINED MINUTE TRACES OF THE ULTRAMARINE GENE-SEED AND AS A RESULT OF THE PURE NATURE OF THIS GENE-SEED IT SOMEHOW COMBINED THE OTHER TWO.
I HAVE BEEN UNSUCESSFUL IN REPLICATING THIS PROCESS SO I AM HUMBLED TO ADMIT THAT I CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY THIS HAS OCCURRED. ALL I CAN GIVE ARE THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS:
# MONITOR THE CHAPTER FOR ANY FUTURE DEVIATION OR MUTATION
# SO AS TO AID THIS CHAPTER IN ITS RECOVERY AND TO UNDERSTAND THE NATRE OF THIS FLAW, SEND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BLOOD ANGELS TO OFFER WHAT GUIDANCE THAT THEY CAN.

British Napoleonic Army

I have finally managed to paint up all my Napoleon @ War British figures.  This gives me a basic army but I believe that I need to add 1 more box of infantry (4 units) to make it ‘legal’.  I also intend to use it for Lasalle as well.  I have already posted up photos of it but I finally had the enthusiasm (and lack of work this week) to paint up the rest. As well as the box of infantry I would like to buy a horse artillery set as well.

Vietnam village planners sacked

Over the last couple of days I have been building some Vietnam buildings called hooches.  I must admit that the first 4 buildings built were looking good until I painted them.  As hooches are made with grass/bamboo I tried to give the impression by using textured paint that I quickly slapped together.  I was not impressed but kept going and then painted them a nice green colour (of grass).  I then posted them up on the Fields of Fire forum and the helpful members reinforced my thoughts and was given extremely useful advice.

Using this information I have then constructed a new building (based on one I saw in a battle report) and I am much happier with the new version.  It is more labour intensive but so much more worth the effort.  The pictures go from the crappy ones to the new improved version.
